“Pollero?”

“Chicken handler. It’s what they call the guys who take the illegals to their destination. The illegals are the chickens. It’s a really ugly business. These people pay a lot of money to get led through here, to get to a safe house, then on to somewhere else to get a minimum wage job, if they’re lucky. The truck breaks down, something else goes wrong, they end up stranded in the desert and they die. Since they’ve tightened up the border so much around San Diego, we’ve been getting more and more of this here. But, here too, the danger is greater than it’s ever been.”

“Danger of getting caught, you mean?”

“No. Danger of dying. These people are literally running through here with nothing—no food, no water, no money. And they’re afraid. They get lost, they get left behind. Sometimes the polleros just abandon them once they get them over the border.

People are found dead out here. Happens every year.”

“How long have they been here?” Kim asked.

“She says three days right here. I don’t know how long since they crossed the border. This wound is infected.”

As Kim’s eyes became adjusted to the dimness, she saw Ramon’s lunch tote and their water jug in the back of the mine.

Randi spoke again to the man’s wife, who was still sobbing.

By her tone, Kim could tell that Randi was trying to reassure the woman that things would be okay. Kim was struck again by Randi’s competence, her ease at taking control of a situation.

There were times, Kim thought, that she wore that white hat very well.

Recalling the image of Randi tossing Minnie down Pinkie’s bar and laughing about it, she shook her head. She couldn’t reconcile these different characters. There was obviously something she didn’t understand about what had happened that night.

Randi led the way out of the mine and Kim followed, the girl still clinging to her hand.

“We’ll need to get him to a hospital,” Randi said. “Let’s go 137
